Listening #2: The 3 A's of Awesome (due Tuesday, 5/26)

Listen to the following TED talk. After listening, all you have to do is post a comment responding to something he said that "spoke" to you.

  1. “None of us can predict the future, but we do know one thing about it and that's that it ain't gonna go according to plan” These words impress me and make me remember a little story of mine. I was junior golf ranking no.1 when I was 15. I got attention from government, and I was sponsored by a few renowned companies, seemingly, everything of my life seemed to be very well by then. However, I hurt my back in the next year, technically, I hurt my spine. Many doctors, who I hate because of their honesty, told me that I’m not suitable to be a golf player anymore. Even though I kept making effort to be a top golf player for a couple years later, indeed, I’m not suitable to be a golf player anymore because of my spine’s condition. My skills never go back, Finally, I had surgery and totally gave up being a golf player when I was 19. I spent ten years trying and planning to be a top golf player in the world, but I eventually fail. “the future ain’t gonna go according to plan”

Sorry for digression, actually, I’m an optimistic guy, and I just wanna share my little story with you. Lol

I learned a few things from this video, and I wanna share with you what I learned. For me, finding the things that we love to do in life is the most important for everyone, and it should be based on attitude, awareness and authenticity. Why attitude is so important? Like Bill Gates said in 2014 Stanford commencement “optimism fuels innovation and leads to new approaches that eliminate suffering”,” innovation can solve almost every problem.” The problem is not how hard or tough situations are, the problem is what attitude we have when we are facing hard situations. The magnitude of being negative can be a serious problem and cause disasters afterward.

Awareness and authenticity are interrelated. As I say, finding the things we love to do for our life is the most important for everyone, and the first step is that we should know ourselves well. We live in a huge and complex society, and we have been taught what thing we are supposed to do, and suggested what the best is for us. Unfortunately, in this case, it’s relatively hard to understand ourselves, and somehow we will become a person that others want us to be. However, awareness is the first step which can help you find out what the things you love to do in your life.

After we know ourselves enough, we should accept who we are, and never avoid the voice from our heart. For example, one of my friends is a lesbian. She found out she loves women early in life, but she is still dating man. Why? she’s scared. She thinks her families will never accept the truth that she is a lesbian even though she never tells her families. Inversely, she chooses to hide herself, and I can tell she’s not happy. Being authentic to ourselves is the only way to find out what we love to do, and to be happy.

Honestly, I’ve been looking for what I love to do for more than 5 years, and I haven’t found the answer yet. Hopefully I can find out as soon as possible because I wanna enjoy my life, and I believe the only way that I can enjoy my life is doing the things I want to do, I enjoy to do and I love to do.

    Again, sorry for digression. HAHAHA

  2. "You will never be as younger as you are now" - this touched me a lot because it seems that people all the time forget how short our lives are. Human beings sometimes are just too preoccupied about make money, get power, do war. And all of this for what? As the speaker said, we just have 100 years (or even less!) to enjoy and to do best of our lives, but I see people more interesting in satisfy small desires than spend time on things that really matters, such as sharing knowledge and understanding each other.

Also, another interesting passage was about being aware. The problem is once we already saw the world so many times right now, it looks like is not something amazing anymore - and there it is the big mistake. We grow up and we lose our "children eyes" and the ability to be amazed about how wonderful the world is. In addition, things that are so curious to us when we are a child (and that is why we are always asking our parents "why this is happening?"), becomes a normal event. But actually it's not. Even the most simple actions of our bodies that for us seems so normal, like breathing or thinking, actually are such a big deals that took millenniums of evolution. All of this, makes us to think about how special we all are and how many answers we have to pursue during our lives. While we enjoy them. Because time is life, not money. ;)

  3. Hi every, hope you and your families all safe and have no damage by the scary weather last night.
    Thank God for protecting us.
This is the first time I know about this speaker and his speech. I thought this is destiny because I watch it after a night couldn't sleep with thunders and lightings which seemed next to the bedroom's window. (Or maybe I'm a lazy student who waits until due day to finish teacher's homework). I also watched the News on TVs this morning. They talked about how the weather was, what damage that people have been facing with. And the worst news is we lost a part of our community. There are people with a lot of unfortunates, but they still move on and get by it in steads of giving up. All that sad news sand this speech made me question myself. How have I lived so far? Where am I now? And what I want to do?
When I was a little kid, I always wanted to grow up as fast as I could since I didn't have to stick in my parent's control. I wanted to fly out their protective wings to find my own sky. As the time passed, I realize that life is not easy. Sometimes it scares me. At that time, I just want to go back the childhood, then I can hind my shaky heart in my parent's arms. Of course, I can't get through the time to do it, but this speech teach my how to go through my scares. It's important that how you look the life, not how the life treats you. When we got bump in our life, be strong to face with it in steads of letting ourselves sink in pain and hopeless. Afterward, it becomes an experience that helps us grow up. Liked a three years old child, we learn how to appreciate everything that we're been receiving from a pencil to a big opportunity. We always have a little child inside our adult body. We always have a weak part of soul inside our solid appearance. That is not negative because it helps us perceive the beautiful of the world around us and try to complete ourselves.
I'm glad that I have never wanted to be a rich woman. I just want to become a happy woman. Now I realize that "Happy" is even harder since people just feel happy when they accept with all they have, and people that they love also feel happy. I'll try to find my own recipe for my happy dish, and hope you so.
This speech also inspires me a lot cause I love to write, but I scare that my knowledge is not enough, my story is not interesting the reader,...After watching this, now I'm wondering why I don't try. And my answer is I'll try. And maybe, someday I can inspire another people as he did for me. . I'll try my best to be alive, not just exist.
    Another day had pass away
    Why couldn't find my way
    Energy of the youth
    Some how I just wasted.
    Once in a while let
    Mention that no time left.
    Every moment, do our best.
Thank Holy for an interesting lesson.

  4. Although attitude and awareness are really important, what I really feel as a part of me is authenticity because as he said authenticity is who you are and feel cool with that. An especific example that can define this is what is happening to me right now because even though I moved out to another country with a different culture, I'm still being the same. I have had to learn some new things and even change the way I think about some things but that doesn't mean I have changed my personality because I can still doing what I like and I can still having my same behavior, but just understanding that there are some differences I have to respect and accept. Being just you makes you special because that means that you love who you really are and that you are not afraid of showing others your own personality. When someone is authentic helps to have more people following their dreams and being more motivated about what they want to do with their lifes. Being authentic not just have benefits for you because people surround you see your example and that motivates them to be themselves and feel cool with who they are. Every person is special and unique, so we need to be authentic and be cool with who we are because that will guide us to follow our dreams and be filled with love. Although I'm really far from my country and family, being myself really helps me to be ok because no matter what I'm facing I always smile.

  5. After i saw this video, i have had many emotions. Three factors are inportant to be awesome( attitude, awareness, authenticity) which are really true. In my opinion, however, attitude is effecting to be happy and sucess. In fact, success in life depends on attitude. Success does not come to those who have negative attitude, negative, passive before difficulties. Unable to build good relationships with those around them, with colleagues or business partners with the unfriendly attitude, arrogant network. Life can not get peace, harmony, intimacy with selfish attitude, not interested in other people.People have a negative attitude will feel sorry for themselves, who have a positive attitude, then focus on finding solutions and opportunities inherent in it. Human is born not with a negative attitude or positive. Attitude gradually formed under the impact of relatives, friends, social environment and experiences in life. Attitude is not something immutable which depends on the awareness of its role and the will to rise by humans. Replace negative attitude with a positive attitude will get positive results. Changing attitudes will lead to change the look for a job, in the world, since that would change how to choose options for action and results. Life is only changed when the attitude changed. The amazing thing is people can fully master his attitude towards his life wishes and everyone has the opportunity to change his life by changing attitude.

  6. This is such an inspiring talk about how to be happy. I really loved the part he talked about attitude because it is so true and can be applied to any circumstances of this life.

One of my favorite quote is "life is a roller coaster; you can either scream every time you hit a bump or you can throw your hands up in the air and enjoy". Yes, life might be up and down all the time. There will be time we feel extremely happy, but on the other hand, bad things may also happen and just totally bring us down. But, please remember that, we always can make our own choice, either to fight or to give up. And as Ted said, having a great attitude is choosing to keep fighting, to move forward and take baby steps to the future.

For myself, when I listened to his speech, I remembered about the time bad thing happened to me. It was my third year at college. It was a hard year for me for many reason. And my first decision was to give up and my mind was full of negative thought. At that time, all I was thinking about was my trouble, nothing as important as it. I stopped joining activities at school, I stopped hanging out with friends, instead of that, I spent time reading writings of people in the same situation with me. And one day, I looked back and realized that, It didn't help me at all, because those writings were also full of negative thoughts. I was totally beaten up. My grade went down, I lost my friends, I stopped doing all the tiny things that used to make me happy. Because of what? And I was thinking to myself, "what have i done to my life? Where is my previous self?". So I sat down and started thinking about myself, then I learnt one thing that, the more you think about your problems, the bigger they will get. And I had always thought about my problems without trying to figure out any solution for it. So I decided that I had to do something, that I had to make some changes. And that was also the reason that made me come to the US for the first time. That was the biggest change in my life, since I had never gone that far and I had never lived far away from home . Of course, my family didn't like it too, it took me almost a month to make them accept. And it was surely a turning point in my life. The beginning was not so easy for me, but not so long later, things got so much better. I was busy discovering the new place, learning new stuffs, making new friends. And this is what Ted said about awareness. Yes, I was seeing my world as the first time. I learnt so much from my trip, not only about the new country, but also about myself.

So, having a great attitude is a great way to live happily. People who have positive attitude are usually more happy and more successful. It's not because their life is calmer or more stable, but it's because they're facing their problems with a great attitude.

  7. Life is full of surprising things which you have to face regardless to how you define them as a good or bad thing to your life. No matter how you plan for your present and future life, there will be always things out of your expectation.
While I was listening to the presentation, I found that how it is amazing to share your positive feeling which might be life changing and saving for whom they reach the end edge of misery.
This man, who presents his life experience, went through glorious times of his life to the worst. However, no matter how painful his life was, he found his happiness and his success in three words “the 3’s A of awesome” which are “attitude, awareness, and authenticity”.
First, attitude is significant because it is the way you think and you see the situation and eventually, you are going to act according to them. Having absolute trust and faith about yourself even when you do not have any skills is the internal power which pushes you to go forward. What you think you can do is what you will do. So always expect more from yourself. Awareness is the second A. You can't get the happiness and the success to yourself by wishing them. Life is beyond our feeling, wishes, and dream. We are the smartest living being in our planet, we can get knowledge, analyze, and put plan for our success and happiness. Third A, authenticity is what it makes two similar achievements entirely unique, it is what makes you story is more special mine,. It is what makes you break the impossible word in your life.
I agree with what was been said in this presentation. There are things, which are in the bottom of our heart or in the deepest place in our mind, we believe in. No matter, they are 3’s A of awesome or other precious word in our life, but they are exist and all someone’s need is the willingness to find them and get inspire from.

  9. On Friday Fun Day last week, there was a question from question list that has been always in my mind: "If you had three wishes, what would they be ?". Naturally, I answered to my partner without thinking too much my wishlist are: coming to the Africa to help some people who need help; being a psychologist; and making my family happy. After leaving the school, I always asked myself why I could easily answer that question without thinking. Then, through this lecture, I realize that they are not simply my wishes, they are the real goals I am trying to reach by living with a great attitude, not stopping my awareness, and being authenticity.
A lot of people around me such as relatives and friends think that I am lucky person because I can go through most of difficulties smoothly. Honestly, I have the similar feeling like that. However, I trust that one of the most important reasons letting me have a smooth life is because of my positive attitude. As in Neil Pasricha’s lecture, we have always got two choices. One, we can swirl and twirl and gloom and doom forever, or two, we can grieve and then face the future with newly sober eyes. In deed, your attitude will decide your life. When you change it, you change your life. Therefore, instead of laying down and thinking of bad situation, why we do not move forward and look at our lives with the happy eyes.
For me, awareness is a process requiring our authenticity. Being true with yourself is one of the best ways to reach awareness. It is going to be great whenever we get new experiences. They can make you happy, let you feel proud, or somtimes hurt you. However, they put you in the higher level of awareness. That's why he advised us to see the world as our first time. No matter how difficult it is, no matter what pain hits us, that's always the interesting awareness.
It's not easy for anyone to be a completely anthetic person. But as Neil said, following our heart, enjoying our youth, and being true with ourselves will help us to be successful and happy. I heard an opinion that don't waste your life to live another person's life. We can't have a happy life if we always compare ourselves to other people.
You only live once ? It's false. You live everyday. You only die once. So enjoy our everyday and be happy with every moment we have to make our life as a wonderful journey.

  11. How‘s your life? Well, It is happy enough to smile and gloomy enough to cry. Not everything in the garden is rosy and not every day is sunny. As Neil Pasriche said ,“We're all going to get lumps, and we're all going to get bumps”. All of us have experienced at least a hardship in our life: poverty, failure, illness, break-up, divorce, loss and so forth. Somewhere in our planet is there somebody who finds herself or himself in the dark and sees no light at the end of a long tunnel. Life is tough and it does let us down; fortunately, however, we are given two choices: one is to give up and be in the misery forever, another is to accept our lot with courage and equanimity. Larry Hargraves, in his book, he wrote that:” You can't always change your situation, but you can always change your attitude .“ When a door is shut in front of us, we try to find another door and the key to open the new door in our life is attitude. If you want to get out of the dark house, grab the key. If you believe that there is still light at the end of the tunnel, there will be .The message behind the first A’s awesome is no matter how the life turns you down, it is you who have the positive outlook to move on. The second “A” is awareness in which Neil encourages us to view the world through the three-year-olds’ eyes. There are thousands of awesome things around us; they can be the very simple thing like smelling the fresh smell of baked bread when walking by a bakery, Neil said in his talk. The important thing is how you perceive those little things will decide your happiness level. The bad news is we all have a certain period to enjoy it; thus, try to live, not to exist. The last “A” is authenticity. “The way people look at you is not important, but the way you look at yourself “. I just think of a song from my favorite movie “Tinkel Bell”: Being yourself makes you unique from others, so let your heart sing, follow the voice in your heart; you always find who you are. “Each Day Is a Gift” is a short story that I read a long time ago. An old man decided to move to a nursing home after his wife’s death. Every day he woke up, he had a choice; spending the day in bed recounting the difficulties he has experienced with parts of his body that no longer work or getting out of the bed and being thankful for the ones that do. Then, he said :” 'Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away. Just for this time in my life.' But the most impressive comparison he made is: “Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw what you have put in”. His last advice is that everybody has created an own account in the bank of life; the only thing to remember is trying to put as much happiness as you can in the bank account of memories. I am thankful to my family, to all of my friends and to who is reading my note for being sweet parts in my memory account. Following his advice, I’m still depositing. How about you?

  12. Wow. What an amazing speech! It really touched me because it contains things that can happen to anyone. The way in which we choose to overcome all the bad things is what the matter most. The first "A", attitude is so important in every aspect in our lives. With all things that happened to him if he didn't choose to look forward with attitude, it would be definitely more difficult. I am sure that he learned it from his parents. Isn't easy to give up everything to move to other country. You need Attitude to take such a decision. Actually, I think that all of us have it for leave everything that we were used to for our american dream.
When he said : "We grew up taking for granted a lot of things that my parents couldn't take for granted when they grew up." a lot of memories came to my mind. My parents always said that and they still do. It is their way to teach us how lucky we are to have what they couldn't enjoy when they had our age. Making a connection to the rest of the speech, our life is so unpredictable that all circumstances can change in minutes. Nothing here is granted, that's why we should live our life loving each other, putting in first place what really matters. Even if bad things happen, we have to have the ability to see the positive view that we still can found.

  13. According to the lecture the author said “Things are amazing and there are just so many things to be happy about despite the fact we only live for 100 years”. This part of the speech is the most important to me because the author wants to show how our life is so short and how we do not have enough time to enjoy all things around of us. We spend our time to complain about things or story which are not really important that's why for some of us our life is horrible.
