Grammar #9: Quoted and Reported Speech (due Sunday)
Part 1:
Watch the following video.
http://www.schooltube.com/video/8d94448e0ba3a3f756b9/
Write 5 sentences that you hear in quoted speech. There are many ways to do this. Please vary your style and word choice to make it interesting. In other words, do not write all of the quotes in the same format.
For instance,
"I heard you the first time," Ricky said to Lucy, "but what language is it?"
Part 2:
Reply to your own comment. WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO is to rewrite your original sentence in reported (indirect) speech.
For instance,
Ricky told Lucy that he had heard her the first time but that he didn't know what language it was.

Grammar #8: Noun clauses (due Friday)
A friend of yours wants to "set you up" with another friend on a blind date.
"Set you up" means [that] they want to introduce you to someone for a date.
A "blind date" is when you go on a date with someone without having seen them before that night. Incidentally, my husband and I met on a blind date. Now we have a deaf marriage ;)
Write down three things you want to find out about that person using noun clauses. Use a mix of questions and statements.
For example:
1. I'd like to find out what color his eyes are.
2. Could you let me know if he's ever been married before?
3. I wonder what his hobbies are.

Musical Lesson #5: Noun clauses with ? and THAT
Adele: "Someone Like You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qemWRToNYJY
I heard that
you're settled down
That
you found a girl and you're
married now
I heard that
your dreams came true
(I) Guess (that) she gave you things I didn't give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That
for me, it isn't over
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged,
I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
You know how
the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That
for me, it isn't over yet
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged,
I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead,
yeah
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don't forget me, I begged,
I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Never mind, I'll find someone like you

Don't forget me, I begged,

Musical Lesson #4: Noun clause as object (of the verb)
This song brings me back to my teenage years.
I don't care who you are, where you're from, what you did as long as you love me!

See you tomorrow
I hope that you've had a good break. Enjoy your last day!
We won't be holding midterm conferences until Thursday. That's because I need your presentations in order to give you a speaking grade.
Tomorrow my class will meet in Duygu's room. We will do presentations and begin noun clauses.
On Wednesday we will meet in the Call Lab. We will do presentations and continue with noun clauses.
On Thursday, we will combine classes in Duygu's room. Duygu will teach the first two hours while I pull out 6C one by one for conferences. Then for the last 2 hours, I will teach and Duygu will pull out 6D one by one for conferences.

Wishing you safe through the storm
After class I went to my house to bring the rest of the things from
outside inside and to get everything ready for the kitty cats!
I hope nobody is alone and that the storm isn't too bad. Hamza and Richard offered their homes if you want to stay with them.
Perhaps by the time you read this the storm WILL HAVE PASSED and WILL NOT HAVE CAUSED too much damage! And maybe even you WILL HAVE HAD some fun with your flashlights and candles :)

Grammar Review
This was taken from the blue grammar book, chapter 5, grammar review. It basically covers everything we have covered in class. The answers are included. Print out the sheets, do the work, check your answers, and then let me know if you have any difficulties when we return.

Grammar #7: Past perfect (due Sunday, 6/14)
You had an appointment with me yesterday after class. You didn't come
because something happened which prevented you from coming. What
happened? Be CREATIVE. Extra points if you make me laugh.
Use the past perfect, but REMEMBER: With before and after, the past perfect isn't necessary because the relationship between the events is clear.

Presentations on Immigration to/and Emigration from Your Country (UPDATED--see bold print)
Next week we will have some very interesting presentations on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (classes will be separate).
Your topic is Immigration to and Emigration from your country. Please explain the reasons why people either leave your country or come to your country. Alternatively, you can discuss the EFFECTS that people immigrating or emigrating has on your country. Here are some questions to consider:
Do people leave for economic reasons? For educational reasons? For other reasons? Do they usually return home? Do people come to your country to work or to study? If so, who are these people? Do any of these people become citizens? How long do they stay in your country? What are some of the benefits of having immigrants in a country? What are some of the disadvantages?
Go to the following link to see the grading rubric for your upcoming presentation. You will see that there are basically 4 components to the presentation:
1. Content (30%)
2. Structure and organization (30%)
3. Delivery (30%)
4. Powerpoint (10%)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-rIza1967iVbWRFeVZuNThaUHc/view?usp=sharing
To satisfy the feedback requirement, you must meet with at least 2 of your classmates from either 6C or 6D BEFORE you give your presentation in front of the class. You can reserve one of the rooms with technology equipment in the library to do this, or you can practice elsewhere. It is the job of your "listeners" to fill out the feedback forms and give you tips to improve your presentation. They should check for spelling or grammar mistakes in your powerpoint.
It is also their job to inform you if you satisfy the time requirement. If your presentation is too long, you need to condense it; if your presentation is too short, you need to develop it more. You will turn in 2 feedback forms to me before you give your presentation.
The presentation should be 7-10 minutes.

Past perfect lesson from today
Time: THE PAST PERFECT IS IN THE MAIN CLAUSE; THE VERB IN THE TIME CLAUSE IS SIMPLE PAST
Until Rawan arrived here, she had never driven in her life. (OR until arriving here_
Until I arrived here, I had not had any international friends. (OR until arriving here)
Ana had already completed law
school before she arrived here. (OR before
arriving here)
By the time
Hussain was 15, he had dated many women.
By 2010,
Brazil had already won 5
World Cups.
Until he entered level 6, Miguel had never had such wonderful teachers :D
Cause and effect: THE PAST PERFECT IS IN THE
CAUSE-CLAUSE (BECAUSE THE CAUSE COMES BEFORE THE EFFECT)
I was late
for school today because my car had
broken down.
I was late
for school today because I had
forgotten to lock the door and I had needed to return home.
I didn’t do
the last essay because I had
had computer problems the day before it was due.
Reported speech:
Abdul: “Why
didn’t you do the homework last night?”
Mousa: “Because
I had to help my wife with dinner and the dishes and the laundry and cleaning and…”
Mousa told
Abdul that he couldn’t do the homework because he had had to help his wife.
