Grammar #3: Simple past, past progressive, and reduced time clauses (due Wednesday, 6/10)

Tell us about the best day of your life. We want details: Who, what, when, where, why, and how, and also, how were you feeling while the event was happening?

Use both simple past and past progressive to narrate your day, which will show that you know how to use the forms correctly. REDUCE time clauses to BEFORE, AFTER, WHILE + GERUND when possible.

  1. I would like to tell you guys the day that I won my first golf amateur tournament.

It was an important day because it was a big chance to win my first tournament. In the morning, I woke up earlier than I thought because I was so nervous. I took a shower and ate breakfast before leaving motel. I told myself to enjoy the game unceasingly while going to golf course. when I got to golf course, my competitors greeted me with abnormal smile. They were as nervous as I was. However, I had a good beginning, but my competitors were also doing well; our score were almost the same when we finished night hole*. kept telling myself calm down, but I just could't make it. Finally, I was behind by one shot and got into the last hold. I thought I was going to lose the game while walking to the last hole. Suddenly, the miracle happened. The leader who led me by one shot hit a terrible shot. Before he hit, I already put my ball on fairway. It was almost sure that I could win the game, but I didn't hold the chance first time; I hit an terrified second shot. When hitting ball on the green of last hole, we were all square; the last putt decided who is winner.

When I went back to house of golf course, my parents were sitting on a bench. They hugged me and said "son, good job." I attended the awarding ceremony. This was my first time that I have to attend awarding ceremony, and my family and I felt like we were dreaming. After that, My family and I went to dinner for celebration, celebrating for my first championship and for the last putt.

  2. Can I tell you about a day of my life, but it was not the best day because it doesn’t happen yet. Instead, I will share my scariest day.
My hometown has the same flat topography as Houston, and we used to get hit by more than 10 storms every year. As a result, we have flooding from June to October. It is a disadvantage and also a part of our life.
Let come back to the time that I was six years old. In 1999, we had the biggest flood in the past 20 years. We heard the forecast the night before and knew that we would have another flood. Actually, we didn’t care about it much since it was very familiar. But the water rose very fast while we were sleeping. Water entered my house at midnight, and we all woke up to save our pets and food. After preparing some food, my dad said that the water could be higher, and we needed to move to another place. It seemed very hard because water was everywhere and we didn’t have any kind of boat, and unfortunately, my house didn’t have second floor. Before wasting more time, my dad decided to stack up all our furniture as high as we could. When I was up of that “mountain” already, my parents were still saving our pets. I had to share my place with a dog, pigs, and chickens. We also had ducks, but you know, they could swim, and they were swimming around like that was the best time of them while we were worrying. I started to hate duck from that time.
I was worried, but not scared too much. Maybe I was too small to understand that we were being in danger. I just realized it after getting an accident. While sitting on the furniture mountain, I felt very bored because I used to be a playful girl. Thus, I started to play fighting game with my sister. It would be a fun memory if I didn’t fall down into the water. That was at noon, the water was about 6 feet. Because I couldn’t swim, I felt that I was going to die while trying to use all my strength to rise up and get some air. It seemed my strength was not enough, and I sank down again. I thought that was the end of my life. No one could help me, and the last sound I could hear is just my sister’s r screaming. Suddenly, my dad jumped into the water. He was not like me. He could swim every well. When a six year old girl thought that she was going to die, she forgot that she was the only person couldn’t swim in the family. It was very thankful that you have a swimming daddy. My life was saved.
I still remember every detail on that day, but sometimes I think it was not that bad at all. I learned how to respect my parents since they give me the life not only once time. Besides that, I learned how to treasure my own life. The only thing I couldn’t learn is swimming.

      That's very funny!

that we were in danger (be is non-progressive)

      OMG, what a story!

since they GAVE me life not once, but twice.

Well this is an amazing story, and very well-written. I hope that you will learn to swim (if you haven't done so already). My flood story pales in comparison to yours :(

  3. I would like to share one of my happiest moments in my life. It was November 20 last year. I dressed beautifully and went to school on that day. Oh I was not a student anymore, I was a teacher of 15 lovely and crazy kids. I was very happy because there was no class on that day. We just had fun and enjoyed small party. That was my first Teachers’ Day as a teacher. Let me mention a little bit about the Teachers’ Day in Vietnam. Falling on November 20, Vietnamese Teachers’ day is a special day every year for students to show their gratitude and respect to their teachers. When entering the classroom, I was surprised that there was nobody here. While I was standing wondering where my kids were, they suddenly rushed into the room calling my name. My lovely kids tried to outdo each other to give me flowers and gifts. They did make me moved and happy. I loved the picture that a little boy gave me. He had drawn a portrait of me. My portrait looked like an animated character in a comic book. I was depicted skateboarding on the street, wearing a big hat and holding a teddy bear. I laugh a lot when seeing my funny portrait. After singing some popular songs for that very special day, we played games and enjoyed the party.

I think we should have Teacher's Day here at the LCC :)

What a lovely story; beautifully written!

We generally do not reduce time clauses beginning with WHEN; only clauses beginning with WHILE, SINCE, BEFORE, and AFTER. I will explain this in class (if I remember).
So... I laugh a lot when I look at my funny portrait.

  4. On Sunday, the 20th July 2013 was one of the best days of my life. I got up very early to make my way to the Vanlang university in Ho Chi Minh, where I was graduating. I received a Bachelor in Business Administration. I was excited and happy. My family went to enjoy with me because it was a special day to me. I was the first one of my family to graduate by wearing the hat and gown. My parents and my father were especially proud of me. After receiving a Bachelor degree, I took a lot of pictures with my teacher and my friends. While taking the photos, I was fantastic with many styles. Before leaving the school, I attended conference in class. On my return home, there was a surprise party with family arranged for me. This was being planned secretly. It was a wonderful night. This was one of the best days of my life.

Sophia, try to combine these short, choppy sentences into one or two complex sentences in order to improve your writing.

  5. I think one of the best days of my life was when I came here. It was happy but sad at the same time. All my friends and family went with me to the airport and that really made happy because I felt like all of them were giving me their love and support. Since coming here, my life changed a lot. After moving to Houston I grown as a person and I learned a lot of new things. I will never forget the day I came here because that day was really important and special for me. I had a big pool party with friends, family, music, and good food. Having all the people who are important to me, made my day really special and it's one that I consider like one of the happiest days of my life.

  6. My memories

Hey guys I hope you are fine tonight. Today I want to share with you one of my favorite memories. I am not sure if it is the best day of my life until now but for sure it is and will be one of them. I remember this day as yesterday because this day, my state was supposed to publish our result of national exam.
This morning as other mornings of my vacation at this time, I woke up around of 10 am, put my music very loud and sang inside of the bathroom for one hour. I didn’t know why but this day, I was so happy until my Big sister announced me that I missed my exam for the second time. Suddenly I felt my extra energy run away of my body, the sky fell on my head, and one feeling of bitterness started to refill my body. I was so sad that I decided to ask a stupid question because it was obvious: “How did you know that I missed my exam” her answer was a shock for my ear and I decided to leave the home. This was a stupid decision because almost every single person that I knew in my neighborhood was asking me my result and of course I was lying that I did know yet. At almost 1 mile of my home, the little voice in head told me to go back and checked by myself if my name is not on the government list published a couple of hour ago. In order to avoid myself being embarrass, I give my best to avoid my friend houses because I knew that they will follow me, and I won’t be able to hide my result. Unfortunately for me some of my crazy friend were behind me like spies checking all of my movements. Without noticing their presence, they call order friend to follow me. At almost 5 meters of the place that I was supposed to check my name all of them jumped in front of my face. Because I did want to be embarrassed, I told them that I missed my exam and I don’t know why I am here. One of them said we will check by ourselves and then we will accept. 10 minutes after getting inside of the building my friend Gael slapped me and added, “This is not your name”. I was so depressed that I jumped form my chair with this stupid thought “Where”. I couldn’t believe that is was my name on this list that my first news of day was wrong, I was so happy that my friend and I started to sing from this place to my home. At the same time my maid thought that my friends were making fun of me because for them I missed my exam so she took a stick of hood to beat them. She was surprised that I was singing too between this band of boys without their T-shirt. In order to forgave herself, my big sister bought for us several boxes of juice and to show them I passed this exam, I pasted on all doors of the house that list with my name highlighted.
This story is one of my best memories because I experimented all feelings the same days

Are you sure or not sure?

because I knew that they WOULD follow me
I told them that I HAD MISSED my exam and that I didn't know why I was there.
One of them said that they WOULD CHECK by themselves and then WOULD ACCEPT it.

Your maid BEAT YOUR FRIENDS? Sounds more like a bodyguard than a maid!

I love the detail in this story. However, I still don't understand if your sister did this on purpose or by mistake?

  7. Before my classmates died in an accident crash, I had had many memories with him in my high school. The first day I met him, we were just talking as most people do when they don't know each other. After making a good friendship, I traveled with him many cities in my country. He used to make fun of me. On my birthday he brought me a gift, but it wasn't really gift. It was a joke. Before my birthday, he had bought an I phone for himself. After buying his I phone, he took the cartoon of his I phone and brought only the cartoon of his new I phone. I was looking at him proudly. Then, he said open and you owe me one I phone on my birthday. Unfortunately, I did open it and found nothing on it. I was mad, but that what friends do.

  9. I have some special days in my life, one of my best days was the day I got a permanent job, and when I Say permanent, if you live in my country you will know what does that mean.it is not easy to get permanent job in a country which there are just a few private companies there, all people are looking for getting job in one of the government's directors because it is the job for the rest of your life. After graduating from college in summer 2007 with homer; I was 3rd top student in my college, I was offered by two great opportunities which are: studying master without going through the competition and working in the engineering affairs in the university. Unfortunately, I couldn't accept any of their offers because I studied in a city which wasn't very secure and safe place to live, and I wouldn't let my ambitious to cause any more worries to my mother who all she wanted for me is to graduate from the college in this unsafe city and return home safe and sound. Coming home after graduating wasn't exciting to me because I knew that finding job in my city is not easy. While looking for a job, I experienced few disappointment, but I succeed to get temporary job in the municipality director in Kirkuk, which is my home town. I have worked there almost for a year before getting job in the engineering affairs in university of Kirkuk. After getting my permanent job, I felt super happy because all I had to give it way, now it is all back finally because of my job in the university and having good college background, I had the opportunity to get scholarship and do my master in the United States.
I learned from what I experienced that having faith about your abilities to achieve your goals, wishing the good things to yourself and, not giving up your dream are good ways to not get lost in the life which is not goes always according to your plan.

    And here I am now!!!!!!

  10. Hello everyone.
It's very hard to pick just one day as the best of my life, but I will tell you about a very special one to me.
I just have one sister and she is one of my best friends. When I left Angola to move to Portugal, it was my sister that helped me to overcome all the difficulties that I faced. It was a really great help to have her by my side while my parents were working in Angola to support us. But the time that I was so scared for became. She finished her education and was about to go back to Angola to work and to get married. It was a sad day when she left, but I knew that we would meet soon. When she came back to Portugal I was very excited to realize that she was pregnant .After that day, she became even more special to be, if it's possible :).
The day when my niece was born was unforgettable. I tracked all the pregnancy so I was very happy. On that day I was planning to go out with my friends to lunch. I went to her room saying that if she needed any help to call me. I looked at her face while I was grabbing my purse to go. I noticed that she was different, so I asked if she was ok. She said that she was feeling pain but wasn't anything too serious. I decided to cancel my meeting, even though she didn't want to go to the hospital. After staying with her for a while, I realized that she was really suffering so we decided to call her doctor who recommend to go the hospital taking all the necessary things for the baby. It was the big day. After getting to the hospital, I took care of all procedures because they took her to a room. After all, I went there to see her and she said that they decided to do a cesarean section. I got very emotional when she said that she wanted me in the delivery room with her. I was with my camera just waiting to see my little princess while telling jokes to her to make the moment less nervous. Before noticing the time , the doctor said that they were almost done. Few minutes passed when I heard the baby crying. I looked at my sister and she was smiling. They brought the princess next to her and I took a picture of them. After, they took the baby to get cleaned and I also took a picture with her. To be honest, I didn't see any beauty on that little "creature" at that moment, but I loved her so much already. It was really a big event. I called my brother-in-law to give the news because he couldn't be on that moment.
The next days were pure happiness. I stayed at the hospital with my sister for three more days which gave me the opportunity to be the first person to change my niece's diapers, which I am so proud of. The baby was finally looking better. Actually, I could see now how beautiful and cute she was because on the first day she was a little weird :).
In summary, the relationship between my sister and I gave me the opportunity to see my princess Nicole coming to this word which became a beautiful memory in my life the I love to talk about.

  11. It was Fall 2007; I visited my academic adviser at the beginning of the term. We had one of the most terrifying conversation in my life. He said "Mousa, I don't expect to see you here next term. You scored very badly in the last 2 terms. I advise you to start looking for another university". I was shocked. I saw my hole life getting out of my hands. Going out of his office, I was thinking of a way to escape from this bad nightmare. I have decided finally to lock my self in the dorm room. I spent more than 10 weeks a lone in my room, I used to reward my self for good achievements by having dinner and to punish my self by drinking coffee only. by the end of the term, I made it. I have scored A's in most of my courses with a couple of B's.

  12. When I stopped to think which one was the best day of my life, I felt very lucky to realize that actually I don't have just one, but a lot of unforgivable days to share. It is really hard to chose one, but I will be able to give more details about something that has happened recently, reason why I will be telling you about my graduation from Law School, almost five months ago.
After 5 years of perseverance and hard work in Law School, it was really rewarded to see all my family and friends at my graduation, to celebrate the fact that I had have finally became a lawyer. My boyfriend, in particular, traveled from Houston to Rio de Janeiro to stay less than 48 hours in Rio, just to tell how proud he was of me. My mother was crying all the time during the ceremony, and even my father, who is a little hard to please, was smiling the whole time.
After the ceremony we had a big party. Two friends and I had been planning the party for our class for two years. So it was also very rewarded to see everything going so well. Before the party, we had so many reunions and discussions about the best DJs to chose, the best place, the best buffet... everything to make the best night of our lives. And we made it. The party lasted for 8 hours but seemed like it was just 15 minutes. While dancing, I was trying to give enough attention to all my friends. While checking if the sushi had arrived on time, I was trying to make people have as much fun was possible. And see everybody enjoying and all my friends so happy was priceless. The best of all, it was to know that what happened that night just happened because I made it. I made an unforgettable night to many people that I love, not just because the party itself, but because I took the opportunity that my family gave to me and I turned into a diploma. Is no better feeling than knowing that I did the best I could have done.

  13. I would like to tell you the best day of mine in China. I cooked breakfast after waking up at 600am. Then, I went out for a meeting which is important to my part-time career. While driving to my destination, I was so nervous. By the time, I was drinking a lot of water in order to calm down. However, I found that it was totally useless. About 30 minutes later, I sat at the front of the person who was going to interview me. He easily found that I was too nervous and then he told me to calm down with smiling. Surprisingly, I calmed down quickly and answer those questions to him. Finally, I was hired by this company for one year. That's the best day of mine in China because I had a special experience which is good for my growth.

  14. Evening guys! Just like all of you, I also have many interesting experiences in my life, and the best day I want to share with you is that day when my little was born. It was almost two years ago, but the memory is so fresh like just happened. Whole of that year was really important for my family, because my mom was pregnant at 40 years old and I was going to graduate from high school. As usual, after a evening's studying, I felt hungry, so I text my mom at the break time to tell her to buy some food while taking me home from school, however, there was no response in 1 hour which was so strange that made me get nervous. I guessed there was something wrong with my mom, but never thought about that my mom was going to give birth until I got my dad's call. I was so excited to I couldn't wait to see my mom and brother right now! On the way to the hospital, I also became worried about my mom, because she had a really hard time while being pregnant. She couldn't sleep well, didn't have mood eating things and always felt uncomfortable! Fortunately, both of them were safe when I saw them! I looked at my little brother, he was so lovely and small that made me felt that life is really amazing again! I was so proud of my mom and little brother!

  15. My graduation day was a day that I will not forget it in my whole life. Two years ago, I graduated from high school and the last day of school was the graduation ceremony. It was an emotional day when I was wearing the graduation gown and cap. At that moment after I heard my teacher calling my name to hand me my certificate, I walked across the stage. While I was going the stage, I realized my mother was crying. She was truly proud of me and I felt that I achieved on of my goals. I always recall that moment to motivate me. At the end of the ceremony, when the entire students received their certificates, we gathered on the stage to take pictures of our memories, classes, and teachers. Then, we were throwing our caps into the air whit tears and laugh. Graduating from high school was a memorial day.

  16. First of all, I'm really sorry for late summiting this comment :(((. I have totally missed it until Holly discussed about it this morning @.@.

Fortunately, I have had a lot of happy days in my life, so it's very hard to pick one of them for the best day. My mother is always special with me and everyday I have with her, it's my best day. I remember her birthday one year ago. On that day, I and my little sister planned to celebrate an amazing birthday party for her without letting her know it. In the early morning, while she was preparing breakfast, we were trying to lay quietly as if we were sleeping. We realized that she felt a little bit sad because both of her daughters didn't mention anything about her special day. When she left home for working, I and my sister sat up and came to the market to prepare for the party. At market, my little sister was trying to pick the best bunch of flowers while I was finding some necessary foods for dinner. After finishing all of them, we came to the bakery where we could find a lovely birthday cake for her. On the way to get home, we dropped in a gift shop and found birthday cards along with some decorative materials. At home, we cleaned up everything before starting to prepare for our small event. I was cooking while my sister was arranging tables and decorating on the wall. At 5.30 pm on that day, everything was almost done. It was time for us to wait and surprise her accordingly. Our parents got home at 6.00pm. Upon opening the door, my mother looked at the wall, saw the cake and she was totally surprised by all of things we made. My sister suddenly appeared with a bunch of flowers and a birthday card in her hands. Right after that, I stood next to my mother with a small gift and said "Happy Birthday Mommy, We love you". Together, we sang "Happy Birthday" song and wished her have a great birthday. Although this was just a small event, I realized that my mother was so happy. The things she needs are not the flowers, birthday cake, or expensive gifts. The only thing she wants is her daughters being with her on her special days. Making her happy is making me happy. Her happiness is my happiness. Thus, her best day is also my best day. :-D

  17. Hi everyone, sorry for the late submission too. I did it before with my phone, but I forgot to copy it, and when I submitted, it just disappeared and I was too lazy to type it again.

I wanted to share with you guys one of the most happiest days in my life. That was the day I got my first paycheck. It was about 4 years ago, when I was in America. As I told you in the class, I was born in a big family with 3 older sisters. So since I was a child, I didn't really have to do anything at home, all my sisters did it. So even when I was in college, I wanted to find a job but my family didn't let me. They just wanted me to concentrate on studying. That's why, after I graduated, I still had not had any working experiences. So the internship trip to America could be called my life-changing event. I stepped out of my safety zone, out of the pampering of my family and started to do things by myself. It was not easy at first for me for many reasons; the language, the culture, the job itself and many other things... But finally I made it. The day I got my first paycheck, I was almost crying. I wanted to open the envelope right away, but I tried my best to wait until I got home. I called my family. While we were talking, I opened my paycheck and showed them. My parents said that they were so proud of me, and I was proud of myself too. That was the feeling when you tried so hard for something, and then you got something in return. At that time, I felt that i became more mature and independent.
