Grammar #9: Quoted and Reported Speech (due Sunday)

Part 1:
Watch the following video.

http://www.schooltube.com/video/8d94448e0ba3a3f756b9/

Write 5 sentences that you hear in quoted speech. There are many ways to do this. Please vary your style and word choice to make it interesting. In other words, do not write all of the quotes in the same format.

For instance,
"I heard you the first time," Ricky said to Lucy, "but what language is it?"

Part 2:
Reply to your own comment. WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO  is to rewrite your original sentence in reported (indirect) speech.

For instance,
Ricky told Lucy that he had heard her the first time but that he didn't know what language it was.

29 comments:

  1. 1. Lucy told Ricky, “It’s the language I want our child to learn: good English.”
-->Lucy explained that good English was the language that she was using and also wanted their child to learn.
    2. “Now, Lucy, your aren’t going to teach our child to talk that way,” Ricky said, “aren’t you?”
-->Ricky wanted to make sure that she wasn’t going to teach their child to talk the way she was talking.
    3. “I certainly am,” Lucy answered, “From the time our child is born, it isn’t going to hear anything but perfect English.”
--> Lucy replied that she was certainly sure, and their child wasn’t going to hear anything but perfect English since they were born.
    4. “Well honey, it’s very nice thought,” Ricky agrued, “but as usual you have no logical ‘spanation for doin’ it the way you’re doin’ it.”
-->Ricky notified Lucy that was a very nice thought, but she usually had no logical idea about what she was doing.
    5. Ricky asked Lucy ironically, “Do you mean to tell me that I could have gotten out of this whole deal by just taking you to a movie?”
-->Ricky ironically asked Lucy whether she meant that he could have gotten out of that whole deal by just taking her to a movie.

    3. These are very good, thoughtful questions. I appreciate that :)

Q1: The tag question "can't you" does not have to be reported. It's just a speaking device--it does not contain real content.

Q2: These are actually 2 separate sentences. The first sentence is a statement and the second one is a question. So a comma after Lucy said and a capital T for "To what do you attribute...?"
