Real in the past vs. Unreal in the present

The point of this lesson is to show you that we can have the same form (if I was/ if I did) but have two different meanings. Look over the examples and ask me questions if you have them.

Did I tell you about my cat, Luigi? Maybe I did, but I can’t remember.

If I did, then forgive me for repeating myself.

If I didn’t, then this will be a new story for you.

REAL IN THE PAST (it's possible)

Was I rude to you yesterday? I hope not, but I’m not sure.

If I was, please forgive me.

If I wasn’t, then just forget about it.

REAL IN THE PAST (it's possible)

Do I have a million dollars? No, but…

If I did, I would sponsor a semester of tuition for my favorite 250 LCC students.

UNREAL IN THE PRESENT (it's impossible)

FACT: I have a lot of wonderful students this term.

However, if I didn’t, I wouldn’t cry.

UNREAL IN THE PRESENT (it's impossible)

Am I the Queen of England? No, but…

If I were, I would live in a fancy palace.

UNREAL IN THE PRESENT (it's impossible)

Am I a teacher? Yes, but…

If I weren’t, I’d be a professional basketball player.

UNREAL IN THE PRESENT (it's impossible)
